A petrographic study of a sandstone with layered structure

A petrographic study of a sandstone with layered structure

Revue de l'Institut Francais du Petrole 19(7-8): 901-920

The Cambrian sandstone reservoir rocks in the Hassi-Messaoud field, Algeria, are well sorted, finely parallel cross-stratified and cross-laminated quartz sandstones with a wide range of permeabilities. Cross-laminae that are relatively coarse-grained, well sorted, and poorly cemented generally have the highest permeabilities parallel to the laminae. Units made up of both coarse and fine-grained and/or variably cemented cross-laminae generally show the greatest differences between permeabilities along and permeabilities normal to the laminae. Reservoir quality can be correlated with cementation, abundance of cross-stratified units, dominant grain size, and vertical variation of grain size.
