A proteolytic system in growing and non-growing cells of Escherichia coli

A proteolytic system in growing and non-growing cells of Escherichia coli

Folia Microbiol 4(3): 167-175

Cells of E. coli contain a protease system splitting its own proteins as well as casein labelled with I131 at a slightly alkaline pH. The proteolytic system is not present in the cells as an enzymogen-form and its activity is not diminished even after 55 passages on a synthetic medium with ammonium chloride as the role source of N. The features of this system are described in detail.
