An analysis of characters was made of 11 Atlantic and 54 Pacific specimens of F. acutus. They can be distinguished on the basis of the eye and snout expressed as a percentage of head length. As redefined, the sspp. should be named F. a .acutus for the Atlantic form, and F. a. rostratus (Exocoetus r. Gunther = F. a. pacificus Bruun - Hemiexocoetus caudimaculatus Fowler) for the Pacific form.
