Acid monoamine metabolites of cerebrospinal fluid in mental depression and mania

Acid monoamine metabolites of cerebrospinal fluid in mental depression and mania

Journal of Neurochemistry 13(12): 1545-1548

Twenty male inpatients with mental depression or mania were studied in respect of 5-hydroxy-indoleacetic acid and homovanUlic acid in the CSF [cerebrospinal fluid]. The results obtained suggest a decrease of CSF hydroxy-indoleacetic acid in the acute phase of depression, with a fairly slow rise to normal values on recovery. The values were low also during a manic period, but appeared to be somewhat higher than during depression. The CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid level seemed more closely related to mental changes than did the CSF homovanillic acid.
