Activation of pro-teolysis in malignant tumors

Proteolysis in animal organs was increased by HCN and by H2S, or in the cell itself by a natural activator, zookinase, the amount of which increased during autolysis of the tissue. The hypothesis, that there is a relation between the inhibition of cell respiration in malignant tumors and acceleration of their proteolytic activity, is supported by the fact that naturally occurring sulphydryl groups like cystein and glutathione inhibited respiration and also activated proteolysis. The amount of the activator increased during the ripening of tumors and was accompanied by an increased proteolytic activity of the tumor. The causal relation of respiration to proteolysis led to necrosis of the tumor.
