When treated at the tillering stage, an increase in the depth of water produced taller plants and fewer tillers. Water temperatures of 37[degree] C and 15[degree] C during differentiation and development of young panicles arrested the development and elongation of internodes and led to late tiller emergence and lower yields. The ill effects were severe in any depth of water. If treated at the booting stage, the ill effects increased progressively with depth of water, due to immersion of the young panicles which were always submerged by treatment at the stage of their development. The damage in all cases of high and low water temperatures was due to the effects on the young panicles.
