CO60 was used as a source of gamma-radiation for the study of the dynamics of soil moisture reserve. Preparations of Co60 with an activity of 10 [mu] curie were placed in cylindrical lead containers 5 cm high, 4 cm in diameter, with an aperture 3 mm in diameter, and buried in soil at a depth of 60 to 75 cm. A STS-8 counter tube was placed at the surface of the soil and was connected with a pulse counter constructed by A. I. Danilin. The moisture content of soil was calculated from the change of intensity of radiation. The results of these measurements fully coincided with those obtained in the control by the method of drying. Measurements of density (volumetric weight) of soil were performed by means of horizontal irradiation, correcting scattered gamma-radiation. The results of measurements conformed with those obtained by weighing soil specimens. It is advisable to use for such measurements scintillation counters with one crystal, or better 2 crystals operating by a coincidence circuit; this increases the accuracy and the workability of the measurements. To study the velocity of flow of ground waters, I131 in an amount corresponding to 10-15 [mu] curie was introduced into a borehole. The velocity of the current was determined from the time of appearance of tagged water in an aperture of the borehole situated in the line of direction of the current. The coefficient of filtration of peat mass saturated by water was determined in a similar way. The results coincided with data obtained from measuring the velocity of filling and pumping calculated according to the Dupui's formula. Intensity of movement of capillary water in the soil at the edges of the capillary zone, was studied from the height of rise of tagged water alongside the wall of an excavation, and from distribution of I131 in soil, after it has been introduced by means of a rubber tube into an inclined borehole. The project was carried out by the All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Melioration.
