Association of myxovirus parainfluenza-3 with pneumoenteritis of calves: virus isolation

Association of myxovirus parainfluenza-3 with pneumoenteritis of calves: virus isolation

American Journal of Veterinary Research 27(119): 981-986

A viral agent was isolated from the intestinal contents of a 36-hour-old Jersey calf that died of pneumoenteritis. The virus was identified as a myxovirus parainfluenza-3 (MPI-3) on the basis of cytopathic effect (CPE), ether inactivation, hemagglutination (HA), hemadsorption, hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), serum neutralization (SN) tests, and plaque formation. The virus hemagglutinated human type O, bovine, guinea pig, swine, and rabbit erythrocytes, but chicken and sheep erythrocytes were not affected. The virus was capable of propagating in 7-day-old chicken embryos without causing a consistent death pattern. Three of 4 calves inoculated with the virus developed diarrhea. A colostrum-deprived calf died 10 days postinoculation. Pneumonic lesions were found in all calves necropsied 10 to 14 days after exposure.
