The red earth (terra rossa) formations of the Mediterranean region are the product of alteration of bauxites under conditions which obtained in the geologic past, but not under present climatic conditions. They consist of aluminous minerals, especially hydrargillite, and predominantly of gels, in amounts depending on distance from the ancient bauxiteterrain and degree of recrystallization. Neither the formation of bauxite nor that of terra rossa involves alteration of limestones, although in the former, the alkaline reaction of a lime base plays a part geochemically.
