Bivalves taxonomy of the Cenomanian-Turonian strata of Gabal Nezzazat, west central Sinai, Egypt

Bivalves taxonomy of the Cenomanian-Turonian strata of Gabal Nezzazat, west central Sinai, Egypt

Magallat Kulliyyat al-ulum Gami'at imarat al-'arabiyyat al-muttahidat = Journal of the Faculty of Science

A succession of shales, marls, sandstones and limestones of Cenomanian-Turonian age is well exposed at the lower part of Gabal Nezzazat area, west central Sinai, Egypt. Sixty-one species of bivalves could be identified from these strata, which are known as the Raha and the Wata formations. These bivalves are mostly abundant in the Cenomanian but rare in the Turonian. The studied bivalves show a predominance of Pteriomorphia (45%) and Heterodonta (40%) with subordinate occurrence of Anomalodesmata (8%), Palaeotaxodonta (4.8) and Palaeoheterodonta (2.2).
