A PAL gene fragment 866 bp in length (named SjPAL) was cloned from Sophora japonica (Styphnolobium japonicum) by RT-PCR using a pair of degenerated primers designed based on the sequence of other plant PAL gene conserved regions. The deduced SjPAL polypeptide was highly identical (>87%) with the amino acid sequences of other plant PAL genes, and contained similar active sites as the PAL proteins in Oryza sativa and Arabidopsis thaliana.
