In this paper, root characteristics were compared among different types of rice cultivars by using the method of potted planting to provide the basis for rice root breeding. The results showed that the hybrid rice was superior to traditional cultivars in rooting capacity, root length, root volume, root absorbing area, root dry weight and the ratio of root to the aboveground parts.
