Diet choice by Rivulus luelingi on depletable resources

Diet choice by Rivulus luelingi on a size stratified distribution of Culex sp. larvae at three densities was studied in the laboratory. The reactive field volume model (RFVM), the apparent size model (ASM) and optimal foraging theory (OFT) were compared. The RFVM was accepted at low density, and rejected at the other densities. Density affected preference for all sizes of Culex. The preference changes due to changes in density allowed rejection of ASM. R. luelingi size influenced preference for all sizes of Culex sp. predator size was inversed related to handling- pursuit times of all Culex sizes. Handling-pursuit time was directly related to Culex size for each R. luelingi size class. Profitability correlated positively with Culex size. Niche breadth became narrower with increasing density. Prey depletion decreased with increasing density for all R. luelingi size, thus they used the fixed amount rule of patch exploitation. Thus prey selectivity by R. luelingi approached optimality.
