Establishment of smooth bromegrass for seed production by sowing with and without cover crop, and on different sowing dates without cover crop

Establishment of smooth bromegrass for seed production by sowing with and without cover crop, and on different sowing dates without cover crop

Norsk Landbruksforsking 9(1-2): 51-58

Establishment of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) for seed production with and without barley as cover crop and on different sowing dates without cover crop was investigated approximately 14 days between each sowing. On average for all trials sowing with cover crop resulted in a seed yield of approximately 280 kg per ha, while sowing without cover crop earlier than the middle of July gave approximately 600 kg per ha. Sowing in the first part of August gave approximately 200 kg seed of smooth bromegrass per ha. It was found that sowing with cover crop, or sowing without cover crop in July-August reduced lodging and tended to produce heavier seeds compared with sowing without cover crop in May-June.
