Ask the doctor. My total cholesterol level is well below 200. My LDL is low, my HDL high, and my triglycerides and homocysteine are both in the "desirable" range. The one thing out of whack is that my lipoprotein(a) level is more than double the "normal" limit. My cardiologist wants me to take niacin to bring it down. I can't find any information on how serious a problem this is, especially in the context of otherwise good cholesterol levels and a healthy lifestyle. (I e. Harvard Heart Letter 12(10): 8-8, 2002

By the way, doctor. I take 20 mg of Lipitor and 10 mg of Zetia. My total cholesterol has declined from 177 to 145, my LDL from 133 to 93, but my "good" HDL cholesterol also went down from 46 to 41. Would you consider my low HDL level a large risk factor? If so, is there a regimen that would increase it?. Harvard Health Letter 30(3): 8-8, 2005
