Location and categorization of Zonocerus variegatus egg pods, and evaluation of egg destruction as a control measure

The tops of egg pods in 34 Z. variegatus oviposition sites at Ayepe, Nigeria, were exposed in July and August 1988. Slivers of wood driven into them were used to mark their positions. The pattern of distribution of pods within sites was noted. Pods in 27 other sites were exhumed and any previous damage done to them noted. Their lengths and number of eggs in them were determined. The pods were then desiccated and the resultant egg loss estimated. Z. variegatus oviposition sites varied in shapes and surface areas, and in the number of disposition of egg pods in them. Sites comprised regions with egg-pod clusters and regions with patches of pods. Pods in clusters constituted 66.6-84.3% of the total number per site. The pods fell into three categories. Large (Length gt 3.5 cm, mean number of eggs = 110.0), medium (2.6 ltoreq length ltoreq 3.5, mean number of eggs = 61.4) and small (Length lt 2.5, mean number of eggs = 26.3). Damage to pods in the soil accounted for a loss of 39.6% while desiccation of exhumed pods accounted for a loss of 99.7%. As a prerequisite for control Z. variegatus by egg destruction, effective location of pod clusters is emphasized.
