This manual, prepared under the technical guidance of the Food and Agriculture Organization Plant Protection Service, demonstrates methyl bromide alternatives (including cultural methods, physical methods for soil disinfection, solarization, chemical alternatives, and combined alternatives) for soilborne pest (mainly fungal diseases and nematodes) control that are already available in Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland, their advantages and limitations, as well as the need to further implement integrated pest management to achieve the necessary results and avoid crop losses due to the incidence of several noxious organisms in soil. Specific topics covered are: major soilborne pathogens on tomato and cucumber in Bulgaria, and methods for their management; cultivation in Hungary without methyl bromide; and alternatives for the replacement of methyl bromide as soil fumigant in Poland. This compendium of technical information is useful to scientists, extension workers, other agents working directly with farmers, and farmers themselves. Other countries in the region or elsewhere with similar climate and crop conditions may also use this information for local validation and adoption if necessary.
