'Nira' (Co 86032) is a hybrid derived from the cross between the two cultivars viz., Co 62198. CoC 671. Co 86032 is a high yielding and high sucrose containing mid-late variety with reddish pink and straight stalk having slight waxy coating on internodes. It has dark green, semi-drooping leaves, less spines on leaf sheath and closed tops. The variety is moderately resistant to smut and wilt disease, and sparse flowering. Based on it's performance in station and multilocation trials and All India Co-ordinated trials, the variety Co 86032 recorded 15.7 and 16.7% more cane and CCS yields, respectively than the check Co 7219. It has 0.48 units more sucrose per cent in juice than the ruling variety Co 7219. This variety is suitable for Suru (12 months). Preseason (15 months) and Adsali (18 months) plantings in Maharashtra. The variety yields more jaggery of excellent quality and is a good ratooner. It was, therefore, released under the name "Nira" for commercial cultivation for Maharashtrain May, 1996.
