On Trachelomonas cervicula Stokes and Trachelomonas varians Deflandre

On Trachelomonas cervicula Stokes and Trachelomonas varians Deflandre

Boletim da Sociedade Broteriana 64(2): 245-258

Trachelomonas cervicula and Trachelomonas varians have been considered by some authors to be independent species while others regard Trachelomonas varians as a synonym of Trachelomonas cervicula. The morphology of the lorica in both species has been studied thoroughly using optical microscopy; however, little is known about cytological structures, especially chloroplasts, thus making it difficult to distinguish the two species. Electron microscopic study of the lorica of these organisms as well as optical microscopic analysis of the cytology of samples collected in the central littoral region of Portugal lead to the conclusion that Trachelomonas cervicula and Trachelomonas varians are two independent species.
