Three purple non-sulfur bacterial strains (referred to as HZ-3, HZ-4 and HZ-5) were enriched and isolated from the fish pond water and sediments in Hangzhou (Zhejiang, China). Among these bacteria, strain HZ-5 can purify aquaculture water from fish and shrimp ponds more efficiently. After 5 days of treatment with strain HZ-5, the chemical oxygen demand of fish pond water and shrimp pond water was reduced by 24.87 and 36.99%, respectively.
