Simulated synoptic atmospheric circulation patterns over Great Plains 6000 yr bp; results from NASA/ GISS climate model versions 2 and 2

We have run identical paleoclimate experiments with the NASA-GISS Atmospheric Global Climate Models (AGCMs) 2 and 2' to examine the effects of including new cloud convection, new land surface hydrology, new cloud liquid water budget, and new planetary boundary layer schemes on simulated 6K (6000 yr B.P.) climate. 6K provides an opportunity to focus on the effect of increased seasonality in the simulation of energy and moisture fluxes over the continents, when ice sheets and global sea surfaces temperatures were similar to modern. The model simulations were run at 4 degrees latitudeX5 degrees longitude (46X72 grid boxes) with nine vertical layers in the atmosphere. The modern controls experiments were run using 1985 A.D. forcing, whereas 6K forcing (e.g. orbital changes, fixed SSTs, trace gases) was imposed as specified by the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP). All simulations were run for twelve years, and results were averaged for the final ten years. Simulated synoptic atmospheric circulation patterns for the two paleoclimate simulations will be contrasted and then compared both to 1) inferred patterns from geologic evidence for enhanced aridity over the Great Plain at 6K, and 2) the spring to early summer synoptic climatology associated with modern High Plains drought (persistence of a high pressure anomaly in central North America flanked by low pressure anomalies along the east and west coasts, northward displacement of the jet stream and storm tracks, and generally weakened transient eddy activity across the continent; Trenberth and Guillemot, 1996, Journal of Climate 9, 1288-1298). The 6K paleoclimate simulated with Model 2' shows improvement in not only matching many of the features observed in the geologic record for 6K climate relative to the Model 2 simulation, but exhibiting synoptic atmospheric circulation patterns consistent with extensive mid-Holocene drought across the Great Plains.
