Sleep therapy in acute inflammations of the lungs

Sleep therapy in acute inflammations of the lungs

Veterinariia (10): 50-54

Experimentally induced edemas and inflammations of the lungs in dogs were treated by sleep therapy. Best results were obtained with pentothal sodium when given in 2-5% solution in amounts of 13-25 mg/kg. Conditioned reflex sleep therapy was also used. Lung edema was induced by means of SO2- Sleep therapy was commenced 15, 30, and 60 minutes after the administration. The sleep lasted 3-5 days. Of the 22 experimental dogs, 3 died (2 from pneumonia), and the rest recovered after 5-7 days. Of the 18 control dogs not subjected to therapy, 14 died in 5 hours to 3 days. To induce pneumonia, 9 dogs were given 2-3 fold intrapleural injections of 3 ml of 2% silver nitrate solution. After 2-3 days, when clear clinical signs of the disease were present, 6 dogs were subjected to sleep therapy and 3 served as controls. All the treated dogs recovered after 7-10 days, the controls died on the 3rd or 4th day.
