The current state of natural reproduction of the Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the basins of the tributaries of the Northern Dvina River (the Vaga and Vaen'ga Rivers, Russia) was studied from 1989 to 1998. A significant decrease in the level of natural reproduction of the salmon was noted in the Northern Dvina basin in comparison with the beginning of the 20th century. The primary reasons for this are the wasteful overfishing of the area for the salmon industry and uncontrolled poaching. The primary biological and genetic indicators of the young fish and smolts of the salmon were studied. It was determined that in the absence of pronounced differences in the length and mass indices, age structure and sex ratio in the young fish populating different spawning tributaries, statistically significant differences were revealed in the frequencies of alleles of the polymorphic protein loci. The number of discovered genetic differences and particularities of distribution of alleles of individual polymorphic protein loci make it possible to hypothesize that there are genetic subdivisions in the salmon from the Northern Dvina River basin.
