Soil organic matter (SOM) in soils from the Northwest Lower Plain in Germany was investigated to characterize its composition and formation. Using the combination of wet-chemical methods and pyrolysis- field ionization mass spectrometry (Py- FIMS) two problems of soil science are discussed.
