Studies on the helminth fauna of Alaska XVII Notes on the intermediate stages of some helminth parasites of the sea otter

Studies on the helminth fauna of Alaska XVII Notes on the intermediate stages of some helminth parasites of the sea otter

Exptl Parasitol 3(2): 161-166

In continuation of investigations of sea otter mortality on Amchitka, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, during May and June of 1952, information was obtained on life cycles and developmental characteristics of 2 spp. of helminth parasites (viz., Porrocaecum decipiens (Krabbe, 1878) and Microphallus pirum (Afanas'ev. 1941)) pathogenic for the sea otter, Enhydra lutris. It was learned that 2 spp. of fishes, Lebius superciliosus (Pallas) and Hemilepidotus hemilepidotus (Tilesius) serve as the intermediate host of Porrocaecum decipiens and observations indicate that L. superciliosus is the most important source of the nematode infections acquired by the sea otter at Amchitka. Morphological characteristics of developmental stages of P. decipiens from the fishes and sea otter are described. A hermit crab, Pagurus hirsutiusculus (Dana) was found to harbor the metacercariae of Microphallus pirum and this larval stage is described. Some ecological relationships which favor a high degree of parasite survival at Amchitka are discussed.
