The effect of squirrel Sciurus vulgaris mantschurius thorn on the regeneration of Pinus koraiensis in secondary broad-leaved forests of primorye

The effect of squirrel Sciurus vulgaris mantschurius thorn on the regeneration of Pinus koraiensis in secondary broad-leaved forests of primorye

Lesovedenie (4): 68-72

Settled squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris mantschuricus Thom.) create stocks of cedar nuts (for the time from yield to yield) that is important for the regeneration of Pinus koraiensis L. forests, especially in the areas within secondary broad-leaved forests, where this woody species has fully didsppeared. Usually, squirrels do not occupy these areas. In the broad-leaved forests, about 67-70% of the total cedar regrowth appear due to the activity of squirrels. The studies carried out showed that animals easily found feed-boxes with cedar nuts and created nut reserves. Therefore, squirrels may be used for the regeneration of Pinus koraiensis within secondary broad-leaved forests, where this process has fully stopped or slowed down.
