The effect of temperature on plant growth

Grains of different varieties of winter and of vernalized wheat were sprouted immediately before sowing, or they were kept in the sprouted condition on ice at 0[degree]-2[degree] for 24-104 days. The leaves of the growing wheat plants were smaller the longer the wheat sprouts were kept on the ice. The delay in the growth of the plants was independent of the stage of the vernalization. The effect of cooling of the sprouts is more pronounced in the case of winter wheat and in the case of the more winter-resistant varieties. Raising the temperature at which the vernalized wheat plants are grown, fails to negate the above described low temperature effects. In plants inured to higher temperatures the leaves grow larger even in the generation following; such effect is retained by plants grown even at lower temperatures. The leaves of early varieties of wheat grown at higher temperatures grow larger even when grown at lower temperatures, than do the leaves of the late-sowing varieties. The author explains these phenomena on the basis of the properties of meristematic cells which have developed as a result of the effect of higher temperatures.
