Kohlstedt, S G (Ed ) The Origins Of Natural Science in America: The Essays Of George Brown Goode Xi+411p Smithsonian Institution Press: Washington, D C , Usa; London, England, Uk Illus Xi-411p

This book contains a collection of five essays written by George Brown Goode, one of the first curators and administrators of the Smithsonian Institute and its National Museum of Natural History. The essays were written in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and presented as lectures to various learned societies of the day. The first two essays trace the development of natural history and science in America. The final three essays trace the development of educational institutions, libraries, and museums in America, outline Goode's theories of the proper role of these institutions in society, and outline propositions for museum development in the twentieth century. The text opens with a brief biography of Goode and closes with an index.
