Variability and inheritance studies in a distant cross of pigeonpea Millsp

Pigeonpea is the predominant pulse crop of India. It's low grain yields can be overcome through introgression of useful characters from wild relatives. In the present study, F-2 variability for some quantitative traits was analysed from a cross of Cajanus cajan cv. MA 2 and Cajanus cajanifolia. Inheritance pattern of some important qualitative traits was also analysed. Transgressive segregants were obtained for pods per plant. Results revealed that out of the traits studied the wild species controlled the dominant expression only for the number of secondary branches. For growth habit, flower colour, pod colour, pod shape and seed colour, two gene control was revealed.
