Variability in stomatal frequency, length and breadth in cowpea Walp

There was scope of improving crop performance by appropriate manipulation of stomatal characters because of their crucial role in the control of photosynthesis and water loss. Variability in the characters, the prerequisite of the breeding programme, was studied for stomatal frequency, length and breadth of both adaxial and abaxial leaf surface of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) employing 25 genotypes under three cultigroups, Unguiculata, Biflora and Sesquipedalis. Comparison of means revealed that adaxial stomatal frequency differed significantly among the cultigroups and was highest in cv.-gr. Biflora, lowest in Sesquipedalis and intermediate in Unguiculata. Mean variation for the other stomatal characters among the cultigroups was not significant, excepting adaxial stomatal breadth between cv.-gr. Biflora and Sesquipedalis. Variance analysis revealed that the cowpea genotypes under study were significantly different for all the stomatal characters. Genotypic coefficient of variance was maximum for adaxial stomatal frequency and broad sense heritability was over 90% for all the stomatal characters. Association of high heritability and moderately high genetic advance for adaxial stomatal frequency suggested its probable control by additive gene action and at the same time indicated it as an effective selection index.
