Bridging departments together--Web based supplemental undergraduate neuroscience teaching at Ithaca College

Interdisciplinary studies are gaining importance in higher institutions because they provides a holistic experience to the students. However, in a major undergraduate institution like Ithaca College, it is difficult to implement such interdisciplinary features due to constraints in manpower, space, and free mobility of faculties and students from one professional major to the other. With the advent of web based technology, it is now possible to overcome these barriers by creating a virtual and mobile environment. Keeping this in mind we have developed an interactive web based megasource designed as a tool to structure, facilitate, and enhance interdisciplinary teaching in neuroscience at Ithaca College. The megasource contains a library of static PowerPoint lecture modules, dynamic streaming audio and video clips, and interacting student-faculty feedback forums. This megasource is also organized by core and common blocks. Core blocks are those that are shared by all disciplines. Common blocks are individualized for a particular discipline. Neuroscience faculty from any basic or clinical department can select modules from these core and common libraries to develop a particular course of interest. In this manner, the megasource facilitate interdisciplinary content that is typically not found within a given traditional course. Of even greater importance, virtual capability for direct interactive communication between all students and faculties across courses and disciplines provide the learner additional holistic experience. Preliminary feedback suggests that this model has the potential to meet the needs of interdisciplinary education.
