Males and females of 2 different populations of the Spanish Pyrenees and a laboratory reared one of the caves in the Laboratoire Souterrain Moulis/France have been tested in 15degreeC for substrate specific chemical signals. In males of the two epigean Spanish populations and the laboratory stock a significant preference for tiles used before by conspecifics could be demonstrated. The females showed the same tendency. Having the choice between tiles of males or females both sexes preferred the tiles of males. No difference between the own tile and a strange one could be found. The specimen of the Spanish cave population tested in dim light under 11degreeC did not have any preference. In a mixed sample of different origin tested in a choice chamber for water born chemical signals a preference for the water of conspecifics but no sex differentiation could be shown.
