Control of Botrytis fruit rot with fenhexamid in relation to developmental stages of strawberry flowers and fruit

Strawberry flowers and fruit were sprayed with fenhexamid to determine optimum timing for control of Botrytis fruit rot caused by B. cinerea. In an experimental field of cultivar Sweet Charlie, flowers were tagged at anthesis and sprayed individually with fenhexamid (0.9 g a.i./liter) at 0, 7, and/or 14 d post-anthesis using a hand-held Chromist sprayer. Fruit were evaluated for disease incidence at harvest and after 7 d storage at 3 C. The experiment was repeated three times during the 1999-2000 season. A single application of fanhexamid at anthesis (0 d) provided excellent control of pre-harvest and post-harvest Botrytis fruit rot, equivalent to three applications at 0, 7, and 14 d. An application at 7 d was less effective than one at 0 d for pre-harvest disease control, and failed to reduce post-harvest disease compared to the control. An application at 14 d did not control pre-harvest Botrytis fruit rot, but appeared to suppress post-harvest disease. These results corroborate other studies indicating that flowers are the principal infection court. Fungicides should be applied within 7 d of flower opening for effective control of Botrytis fruit rot.
