Differential connections of the orbital and medial prefrontal cortex with temporal pole in the macaque monkey

Previous studies have shown that the "orbital" and "medial networks" within the orbital and medial prefrontal cortex (OMPFC) have distinct connections with other cortical, limbic and subcortical regions. In this study, we examined whether these two networks also have distinct connections with subregions of temporal pole (TP) using retrograde and anterograde tracers. Following anterograde tracer injections in the OMPFC, labeled projections from areas in medial network (areas 25, 32, 14r, 10o, 10m,13a, Iai) were found to terminate mainly in the dorsal part of granular and dysgranular areas in TP. In contrast, projections labeled by injections into areas in the orbital network (areas 12m, 12r, 13l, 13m, Iam, Iapm) ended mainly in the ventral part of granular and dysgranular TP. Both networks projected to agranular TP. Similarly, following retrograde tracer injections in areas of medial network (areas 10o, 12o, 14r, 32, Iai, 14c, 13a), retrogradely labeled neurons were found in dorsal part of granular and dysgranular TP, while injections in the orbital network (areas 11l, 13l, Ial, 13m, 13b) labeled neurons in ventral part of granular and dysgranular TP. A retrograde tracer injection in the dorsal part of dysgranular TP labeled neurons mainly in the medial prefrontal network including areas 14r, 14c, 25, 32, Iai, 13a, 10m, 11m. These results indicate that the distinct connections that characterize the orbital and medial prefrontal networks can be extended into the ventral and dorsal part of TP, respectively.
