Effect of bacterial inoculum on seed germination, fresh and dry weight of cowpea Walp seedlings

Germination test on inoculated cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) seeds of 11 germplasm lines conducted in the laboratory showed significantly higher germination in seed inoculated with X. axonopodis pv. vignicola. Germination percentage was maximum in highly susceptible line(s) followed by other lines. The inoculation of bacterial suspension did not cause much difference in fresh and dry weight of resistant (R) line V-585, whereas, in highly susceptible line there has been a greater difference between control and treated ones. The MR, MS and S germplasms have been varying in order of their reaction to the bacterial inoculation. In case of moderately resistant (MR) line the differences in fresh and dry weight were 6 to 9 and 8 to 13 per cent respectively. The difference in length of epi and hypocotyl between bacterial inoculated and control seedlings were negligible in resistant and moderately resistant, non-significant in moderately susceptible and significant in susceptible and highly susceptible germplasm.
