Effect of dietary oolong tea extracts on the concentrations of plasma glucose, antioxidant vitamins and minerals in diabetic rats

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease associated with serious complications. Enhanced oxidation is the underlying abnormality responsible for some of the complications of diabetes. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary oolong tea extracts on the concentrations of plasma glucose, antioxidant vitamins and minerals in diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by an intramuscular injection of streptozotocin (45mg/kg BW in 0.1M citrate buffer, pH 4.5) for three diabetic groups. Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were fed AIN-76 control diet with no additional tea extracts, or the same diet supplemented with 1% tea extracts (water or ethanol extracts) for 4 weeks. Dietary supplementation of oolong tea extracts reduce blood glucose in diabetic rats. There were no significant differences between treatment groups in plasma concentrations of a-tocopherol. Plasma retinol concentration was lower in diabetic rats(p<0.05), but oolong tea extracts increased the plasma concentrations of retinol. However, hepatic concentrations of copper, zinc, and manganese of diabetic groups were reduced by oolong tea extracts feeding. These data show that dietary oolong tea extracts can reduce plasma glucose, and have a complicated impact on antioxidant systems in diabetic rats. This research was supported by academic research funds from Yeungnam University.
