Effect of different sowing dates on heat-unit requirement for different phenophases of brown sarson varieties and dynamics of aphid population

A field experiment was conducted during winter season (rabi) 1996-97 and 1997-98 to study the thermal requirement and dynamics of aphid (Lipashis erysimi) population (Brassica campestris) for 3 cultivars ('KS 101', 'KS 102' and 'KOS 1') of brown sarson, sown at 3 sowing dates (1 October, 15 October and 1 November). The data revealed that October-sown crop accumulated more thermal units and thereby produced significantly higher yield than November sown crop. Although 'KS 101' (Gulchein) recorded higher seed yield than 'KS 102' and 'KOS 1' in turn all the varieties accumulated similar heart units for different phenophases. Temperature ranging from 17.5 to 22degreeC accompanied by relative humidity varying from 62 to 78% favoured aphid population but rainfall had the revers effect.
