This study had as objective to evaluate the effect of the supplementation with monensin and/or energy on body condition and f post-partum ollicular development in Nelore cows maintained on pasture. Females (n=302), being 123 primiparous and 179 multiparous, randomly divided in 4 treatments, factorial 2X2 (supplementation with monensina and/or energy) keeping the proportion of 40% of primiparous per treatment, receiving supplementation during the period of 30 days pre-partum to 90 days post-partum. The energy supplement had 26.5%CP and 2.8Mcal,Kg. The intake of the energy supplement was approximately 1 Kg a day and the medium ingestion of monensina in the groups that received it was 150mg a day. The evaluation of body condition was on day 43.9+-23.15 and the follicular development was accomplished on the average in post-partum day 43.9+-23.15 and 54.3+-23.08 by ultrassonography. The datas was evaluate by GLM of SAS. Body condition evaluation had negative interaction (p<0.1) between energetic supplementation with monensin, the animal's body condition of this treatment (2.8+-0.03) was worse than energetic treatment (3.1+-0.03) and only mineral treatment (3.1+-0.02), and those two were worse than the only monensin treatment (3.2+-0.02). There was no influence of the energy supplementation on the follicular diameter in none of its evaluations. The monensin intake had no significant difference (p >0.1) in post-partum cows on day 44, but on day 54 there was significant difference (p <0.1) in the medium diameter (mm) of the follicles in the animals that received monensin against to those ones that did not received monensin (10.0+-0.18 vs 9.5+-0.17). Only monensin supplementation influenced the body condition and follicular development on day 54 post-partum, probably due to the effect in the concentration of IGF-1, that is positively related to the LH pulse. These data suggest that the monensina ingestion can be a good strategy seeking larger follicular development and possibly to advance the first post-partum ovulation in suckled Nelore cows.
