Effects of acute hypotension on neuronal activity of vestibular nuclei in rats

Effects of acute hypotension on neural activity of vestibular nuclei were investigated in anesthetized rats. Acute hypotension was produced by either intravenous infusion of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or blood loss due to experimental hemorrhage, and electrical activities were measured in the medial vestibular nuclear neurons (MVN). In intact labyrinthine rats, acute hypotension induced by SNP or hemorrhage showed different responses with three patterns in type I and II neurons of MVN. The responses of type I neurons showed excitatory in 2/3 of recorded neurons and inhibitory or no change in 1/3 of neurons, and the responses of type II neurons showed inhibitory in 2/3 of recorded neurons and excitatory or no change in 1/3 of neurons. In unilateral labyrinthectomized rats, the responses of type I neurons in ipsilateral MVN to the lesion side showed inhibitory in 2/3 of recorded neurons and excitory or no change in 1/3 by acute hypotension, and the response patterns in type II neurons were opposite to those of type I neurons. In contrast, the responses in contralateral MVN showed opposite response patterns as against ipsilateral MVN. These results suggest that the peripheral vestibular receptors play a significant role in control of blood pressure following acute hypotension through activation of type I neurons and inhibition of type II neurons in the vestibular nuclei.
