Purpose: To test the feasibility of the retinal prosthesis, we recorded electrically-evoked cortical potentials (EEP) using a micro-fabricated matrix electrode array, which was made by NBS-ERC. Methods: After performing the visual evoked potential (VEP), a 5x5 polyimide electrode array was placed into the subretinal space of the rabbit eye. Cutaneous Ag/AgCL patch electrodes of VEP were also used to record EEP. EEPs were recorded at each stimulation of the array and compared with the VEP results. Results: EEP recordings were elicited by the bipolar pulse stimulation with 1ms duration and 1apprx5mA current. The shape of the waveform of evoked responses was biphasic pattern with two peaks like VEP, but the amplitude was smaller and latency was shorter than that of VEP. Stimulation of different site of the array did not show different results. Conclusions: Focal electrical stimulation of the retina might be a reasonable approach to provide light to blind patients with outer retinal disease and the use of the EEP response is a good way to monitor the proper functioning of the retinal implant.
