The insecticidal, larvicidal and repellent effects of Piper guineense seed oil were evaluated against the rust-red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum infesting stored pearl millet under prevailing tropical storage conditions. Toxicity tests consisted of exposing T. castaneum adults and larvae to filter papers impregnated with five dosages (50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/60 cm2) or to millet grains admixed with a lower range of dosages (25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 mg/5 g seed) of the oil. In the repellency tests, adults were exposed to four dosages (50, 100, 150 and 200 mg/30 cm2) of the seed oil in repellency chambers. Larvae were significantly more susceptible than adults on impregnated filter papers at the lower dosages (50, 100 and 150 mg/30 cm2) of the oil. There was generally no significant difference in mean mortality between adults and larvae in oil-treated millet seeds. Susceptibility of the two target stages of T. castaneum was higher in treated millet grains than on impregnated filter papers: in millet grains treated with 125 mg/5 g seed, adult and larval mortalities were 91.8 and 90.0%, respectively; on filter papers impregnated with 250 mg/60 cm2, adult and larval mortalities were 70.0 and 68.4%, respectively. In both methods of bioassay, toxicity increased with increasing dosage. The LD50 values for adults (63.1 mg/5 g seed) and larvae (79.4 mg/5 g seed) exposed to treated millet seeds were also lower than comparable figures for adults (208.9 mg/60 cm2) and larvae (158.5 mg/60 cm2) exposed to impregnated filter papers. The four dosages of the seed oil were strongly repellent to T. castaneum adults and all evoked class V (80.1-100%) repellency in the species.
