Inheritance of resistance to podfly in pigeonpea Millsp

Pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan is an important grain legume of Asia and Africa. The podfly, Melanagromyza obtusa is one of the most important insect pests of this crop. For investigating the inheritance of resistance, two resistant parents viz, 'PDA 88-2E' and 'PDA 89-2E' and three susceptible parents viz, 'Bahar', 'T-7' and 'KPBR 80-2-1' were used. The crosses were made between the susceptible (female) and resistant (male) parents in lineXtester fashion. The parental lines and their F1, F2 and back cross generations were studied. The percent pod damage was recorded on individual plants. The results suggested that susceptibility is dominant over resistance and resistance to podfly is governed by two genes with interaction between recessive and dominant alleles.
