Treatment capacity of a biofilm medium used in a submerged aerated process

Treatment capacity of a biofilm medium used in a submerged aerated process

Vecteur Environnement 36(3): 66-74, Mai

Fixed film processes are often used to treat the wastewater from small communities. A biofilm medium, BIOTEX(R), was examined to assess its treatment capacity. Laboratory tests at various organic and hydraulic loadings were carried out using a pilot unit. Results show the mean efficiency of this media reaches 94% under an organic load varying between 47 and 300 g BOD5/m2cntdotd, and under a hydraulic load varying between 0.5 and 1.0 m3/m2cntdotd, while maintaining discharge standards of 20 mg/L for BOD5. Removal of ammonia by nitrification was 85% under loadings of 200 g BOD5/m2cntdotd and 0.5 m3/m2cntdotd. However, the performance of the treatment plant seems dependent on the sedimentation efficiency.
