Treatment of anorexia and weight loss with megestrol acetate in patients under radiation therapy Preliminary results

Treatment of anorexia and weight loss with megestrol acetate in patients under radiation therapy Preliminary results

Oncologia 26(8): 38-44

Purpose: Nutritional irregularities are a common problem in oncology patients. The treatment with megestrol acetate can control anorexia, enabling weigth gain, and improving quality of life. We present the results of a prospective study of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, with anorexia and weigth loss, who received pharmacological treatment with megestrol acetate. Material and methods: 26 patients with anorexia and weight loss > 5%, undergoing radiotherapy, received treatment with megestrol acetate 800 mg/day, during 3 months. Results: Anorexia disappeared in all cases. The mean weight, at the beginning of treatment was 63.6 10.5 K:g. Despite treatment, weight decreases during radiotherapy to 62.5+/-11.2 Kg (p n.s.) and later, weight increased to 67.5+/-13.2 Kg at the end of the study (p= 0.04). Only one patient had a thromboflebitis and another had an allergic reaction. The functional capacity and performance status worsened during radiotherapy and later improved without statistical significance (0.88+/-0.82 initial, 1.2+/-0.96 end of radiotherapy and 0.46+/-0.66 end of study). The quality of life assessment score improved during the study but we only observed statistical significance in comparison with the initial score and the final score of the study (p0.005) (79.04+/-13.95 initial, 86.47+/-18.71 end of radiotherapy and 95.29+/-15.77 end of study). The analogical visual scale score increased during the study, without statistical significance. " Conclusions: The treatment with megestrol acetate is effective in controlling anorexia and enables weigth gain when the radiotherapy has finished, and improves quality of life.
