Experimental studies on Tuta absoluta Meyrick in protected tomato crops in France biological control and integrated crop protection

Tuta absoluta is a pest from South America which has been detected in many European and Mediterranean countries since 2006. It was identified in Corsica and the South of France in late 2008, and by 2010 this Lepidopteran species had spread to further tomato-production areas. The pest is present mainly on tomatoes in protected and field crops, and damage on leaves and fruit can be so severe that it can lead to total destruction of the plant. Since 2010, studies have been carried out in experimental insect-proof glasshouses with artificial infestations of the pest. The objective was to gain better knowledge of this emergent pest and to develop adapted control strategies under the conditions of the South-East of France. Integrated pest management is widely used on tomato crops in France, and the predator Macrolophus pygmaeus and the parasitoid Trichogramma achaeae were studied, alone and in combination. The possible effect of the concurrent prey Trialeurodes vaporariorum on the impact of the predator on T. absoluta was also studied. The best results were obtained when the two beneficials were released in combination, even in the presence of whiteflies T. vaporariorum.Tuta absoluta est un ravageur originaire d'Am rique du Sud d tect depuis 2006 dans de nombreux pays d'Europe et du bassin m diterran en. Identifi en Corse et dans le Sud de la France fin 2008, ce l pidopt re est observ en 2010 dans diff rentes r gions de production fran aise. Ce ravageur est surtout pr sent en culture de tomate sous abris et de plein champ et les d g ts peuvent tre tr s graves sur feuilles et fruits pouvant aller jusqu' la destruction des plantes. Depuis 2010, des tudes ont t men es en serres exp rimentales insect-proof en conditions d'infestation artificielle du ravageur. L'objectif tait de mieux conna tre ce ravageur mergent et de mettre au point des strat gies de protection dans les conditions du Sud-est de la France. La protection int gr e est largement d velopp e sur les cultures de tomate en France. Le pr dateur Macrolophus pygmaeus ainsi que le parasito de Trichogramma achaeae ont t tudi s, introduits seuls ou en combinaison. L'efficacit de M. pygmaeus sur T. absoluta a aussi t tudi e en pr sence d'aleurodes Trialeurodes vaporariorum qui peuvent servir de proies concurrentielles. Les meilleurs r sultats ont t obtenus avec la combinaison des deux auxiliaires, m me en pr sence de T. vaporariorum.
