Opportunities for underground geological storage of CO2 in New Zealand; Report CCS-08/9, Technical reviews on carbon, capture, transport and injection technologies

Opportunities for underground geological storage of CO2 in New Zealand; Report CCS-08/9, Technical reviews on carbon, capture, transport and injection technologies

GNS Science Report: 45

A review of the carbon dioxide (CO2 ) capture, transport and injection technology in New Zealand as part of a larger project entitled "Carbon, Capture and Storage (CCS)" commissioned by the New Zealand Carbon Capture and Storage Steering Group (a consortium between industry and the Foundation for Research Science and Technology) is presented herein. This review builds on the comprehensive review of CCS technologies published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2005. The review has therefore focussed on new developments that have arisen from 2006 to the present. The bulk of the review is dedicated to capture technology as this has the greatest diversity of technologies and is the most expensive part of a CCS system in terms of energy, capital and operating costs. This review has considered four configurations for capture of carbon dioxide; post-combustion, pre-combustion, oxy-fuel and chemical looping technology. The post- and pre-combustion technologies both require the separation of carbon dioxide from gas streams with the pre-combustion streams generally having higher carbon dioxide concentrations. The separation technologies can be broadly categorised as sorption and membrane processes with some technologies spanning both categories. (auth/DG)
