Age changes of feeding in Hynobius keyserlingii Amphibia, Hynobiidae

Zoologicheskii Zhurnal 63.7: 1055-1061

The food of larvae consists, mainly, of benthic and phytophilic and, to a lesser exient, of planktonic hydrobionts; the spectra of feeding of the most larval stages are overlapped more than by a half. The period of metamorphosis is accompanied by the transition to the other ecological and taxonomical groups of prey; differences in the feeding of adjacent stages are increased. After metamorphosis, the newts feed, mainly, on land invertebrates and, during the nuptial period, almost exclusively on water forms. Six periods were established in the feeding of H. keyserlingii . No sexual dimorphism in feeding was found.
