Loligo opalescens is a small loliginid that has a maximum recorded mantle length (ML) of 30 mm and is distributed along the west coast of North America from Baja California to southeastern Alaska (Hixon, 1983). Age analysis of adult specimens of L. opalescens were compared to previously published information on growth of this species in captivity to verify the statolith increment ageing technique for this species.
