Abstract
Specific activities (nmol substrate hydrolyzed/min per mg total protein) of crude homogenates of the gut tissues of Arbacia punctulata, Diadema antillarum, Echinometra lucunter, Eucidaris tribuloides and Lytechinus variegatus ranged from 34 .+-. 19 to 462 .+-. 48 for .alpha.-glucosidase, 11 .+-. 2 to 47 .+-. 9 for .beta.-glucosidase, 3 .+-. 1 to 6 .+-. 3 for .alpha.-galactosidase and 7 .+-. 2 to 15 .+-. 3 for .beta.-galacosidase (species means .+-. 1 SD at pH of maximal activity). Maximal specific activity was at pH 7.0-7.5. The Km (measured at pH 7.5) ranged from 0.09 to 0.14 .+-. 0.03 mM for .alpha.-glucosidase, 0.03 .+-. 0.01 to 0.21 mM for .beta.-glucosidase, and 0.04 .+-. 0.01 to 0.06 .+-. 0.03 for .beta.-galactosidase. The calculated Vmax (specific activity) ranged from 37 .+-. 17 to 479 .+-. 41 for .alpha.-glucosidase, 9 .+-. 1 to 43 .+-. 6 for .beta.-glucosidase and 7 to 10 .+-. 1 for .beta.-galactosidase. This reflects the levels of enzymes. No trypsin activity was detected.
