During a three years study, a total of 34 amoeba taxa was found in 261 samples from six small ponds in the countryside around Aarhus, Denmark. Each sample included subsampling from bottom sediment, vegetation and water surface, though not evenly distributed on ponds, seasons and years. All amoebae were studied and photographed using brightfield and phase contrast microscopy but only recorded as present/absent. Identification of naked amobae (Gymnamoebae) is difficult. Thus, in this study, Smirnov & Brown's (2004) classification system based on amoeba morphotypes, i.e. locomotive forms of the naked amoebae, is introduced and used for the first time in Denmark. Testate amoebae were found with the highest frequencies; heliozoa and naked amoebae occurred with almost equal but lower frequencies. The number of species (taxa) continued to increase during the three year study and it is estimated that continued sampling might result in c. 60 species (taxa) after 5-6 years. The conclusion is, that the use of locomotive forms is highly recommended, instead of a very uncertain identification to species or genera. In this way, it is possible to obtain valuable information of the amoeba fauna of freshwater ponds - using only brightfield and phase-contrast microscopy and without the laborious use of cultivation and colouring techniques.
